O2 announced plans for the next generation of its "xda" combo mobile PDA/handset device. The new device, dubbed the "xda II," which is expected to become available in the UK, Germany, and Ireland before the end of the year, will expand on existing features, the company said.

According to O2, the xda II will be based on a 400MHz Intel XScale processor equipped with 64MB RAM, running "Microsoft's latest Phone Edition of Windows Mobile 2003 for PocketPC." Key features of the new device include tri-band cell phone capability, a built-in 640 x 480 resolution digital camera, high quality multimedia functions, and support for downloadable, arcade-style color gaming based on built-in Java technology, the company said.
