Microsoft's MSDN developer website has published a transcript of the Windows XP Embedded (XPe) online "chat" held on October 16. In the chat, 11 different Microsoft engineers and program managers, plus "guest expert" Brad Combs, were available to answer developers' questions relating to Windows XP Embedded.

More than 45 interesting questions and answers are available in the transcript. Questions discussed include:
        • What are the benefits of using Windows Imaging Format (WIM) images compared to System Deployment Image (SDI) images?

        • What's the best method to deploy images and generate unique machine IDs?

        • Does ImageX work on XP Professional or do I need Windows Vista?

        • How do I get the Windows Automated Installation Kit?

        • Can I customize [the] Windows Preinstallation Environment so that my customer sees only my logo and a progress indicator?

        • Is there a best practice doc for reducing image foot print?

        • Does Windows XPe expose Kerberos APIs for authentication with certificates stored on smart cards?

        • Will ImageX work with Windows Embedded for Point of Service (WEPOS)?
Combs is the owner of Imago Technologies, "focused on consulting services and software development for the embedded industry," and the creator of XPeFiles.com, a community-driven site focused on XPe components, tutorials, and information.
