T-Mobile will be offering the Opera web browser on the new SDA II Windows Mobile smartphone as part of its "Web'n'Walk" offering. According to Opera Software, this is the first commercial deployment of the Opera browser for the Windows Mobile 2003 Smartphone platform.

The SDA II, reportedly made by HTC, is a multimedia smartphone running Windows Mobile 2003, according to T-Mobile. It features a QVGA (320x240) display and a 1.3 Mpixel camera. It sports tri-band GSM/GPRS, USB, Bluetooth, and infrared connectivity along with a mini-SD card slot. Software includes the usual Microsoft productivity applications including readers for Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and PDF.

The Opera 8 for Windows Mobile browser supports all major Web standards, including CSS2, DOM 2 and JavaScript, according to Opera. It is based on Opera's new core code and includes the latest version of the company's Small-Screen Rendering technology, which dynamically reformats Web pages to fit the width of any screen, eliminating the need for horizontal scrolling.

T-Mobile's Web'n'Walk initiative aims to grow data services into a mass market by giving users unrestricted access to the full Internet and Web-based services on mobile phones. It is currently available in Germany and Austria and is expected to spread to Great Britain, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic "in the course of the year."

"Web'n'Walk lets our customers click into their favorite sites wherever they happen to be, retrieve the information they require and subscribe to entertainment offers," said Ulli Gritzuhn, CMO at T Mobile International. "We expect all data-enabled cell phones from T-Mobile to be Web'n'Walk devices in five years' time."
