Opera Software has released the production version of its Web browser for Windows Mobile Pocket PCs. Opera Mobile 8.6 is based on the company's latest core browser code, and runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 and 2003 SE devices, according to the company.

takes full advantage of the larger screen and higher resolution of PPC devices by offering tabbed browsing and surfing in horizontal landscape mode.

Opera says that the new browser makes "full" use of the screen size and resolution of Pocket PC displays through its tabbed browsing capability, which easily switches between multiple simultaneously open pages. Additionally, the browser's "Small Screen Rendering" technology automatically adapts Web pages to match screen width in both landscape and portrait modes. Pages can be viewed either in the browser interface or full screen mode, and can be magified for easier reading.

Key features of Opera Mobile 8.6 for Windows Mobile, Pocket PC, according to the company, include:
        • Small Screen rendering
        • Tabbed browsing
        • Zoom
        • Download
        • Navigation and history
        • Bookmarks
        • Landscape/Portrait Mode
        • Full screen/ Fit to screen

        • Pad-lock icon on secure sites
        • User preferences
        • Context menu

This latest release follows a January beta preview of Opera Mobile 8.5 for Windows Mobile Pocket PCs. T-Mobile and Japanese mobile operator Willcom will be the first carriers to ship devices with Opera Mobile 8.6 pre-installed, according to the company.

"Until now, Web browsing options on Pocket PCs have been decidedly limited, said Paul O'Brien, founder of MoDaCo.com, a Windows Mobile on-line community. "Opera Mobile for Pocket PC finally brings browsing speed, security, and usability closer to a desktop experience. For owners of Internet connected Pocket PC devices, Opera is a must-have."

A 30-day free trial download of Opera Mobile 8.6 is available here.
