Opticon announced a Windows CE-based handheld computer that includes 1D and 2D barcode scanning, features IP54-level sealing against liquids and dust, and survives five-foot drops onto concrete. The H15B includes a 2.4-inch display, a 312MHz Marvell PXA270 processor, a 25-key keyboard, and eight-hour battery life, the company says.

As we've previously reported, Opticon already offers two devices, the H16 and H19 (left), that include 1D and 2D barcode scanning plus quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE telephony. The new H15B omits the telephony, but upgrades a previous 1D-only handheld to include 1D and 2D scanning capabilities.

According to Opticon, the H15B (right) has a 900 x 512 pixel grayscale area sensor that can perform 2D scans at up to 80fps. Images may be pitched or skewed by up to 50 degrees, and rotated by any amount, and will still be read successfully, the company says.

Opticon says the H15B can read the following symbologies:

        • 1D -- JAN/UPC/EAN incl. add on, Codabar/NW-7, Code 11, Code 39, Code 93, Code 128, GS1-128 (EAN-128), GS1 DataBar (RSS), IATA, Industrial 2of5, Interleaved 2of5, ISBN-ISMN-ISSN, Matrix 2of5, MSI/Plessey, S-Code, Telepen, Tri-Optic, UK/Plessey, plus Chinese Port and Korean Postal Authority codes

        • 2D -- Aztec Code, Aztec Runes, Chinese Sensible Code, Codablock F, Composite codes, Data Matrix (ECC200/EC0-140), Maxi Code (mode 2~5), MicroPDF417, Micro QR Code, PDF417, QR code
Opticon adds that the H15B is suited for rough-and-tumble warehouse environments, since it survives five-foot drops onto concrete. Operating range is from 14 to 122 deg. F (-10 to 50 deg. C), the company says.

According to Opticon, the H15B has a 25-key keyboard that includes a 12-key alphanumeric keypad, four-way navigation keys, four function keys, five control keys, two hot keys, and one scan key. Red/green LEDs and a buzzer help the operator know when scans have been successfully completed, the company adds.

The H15B is equipped with a 2.4-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, 64MB of RAM, 256MB of flash storage, and a microSD expansion slot, Opticon says. The device runs Windows CE 5.0 on a 312MHz Marvell PXA270 processor, notes the company.

Opticon says the H15B includes 802.11b/g wireless networking with Cisco CCX v.4 extensions as well as Bluetooth 2.0. An 1800mAh battery is said to power the device for up to eight hours.

Available with the separate charging cradle pictured at right, the H15B itself measures 6.46 x 1.26 x 1.10 inches, according to Opticon. Weight, with battery, is just 7.9 ounces, the company adds.
