Microsoft has released some optional updates for Windows XP Embedded. They add a registration resource to the Windows Media Player 10 component, and a component dependency to the Group Policy core component, according to the company.

In August, Microsoft's Windows XP Embedded (XPe) team announced a new kind of software update for XPe developers. These are miscellaneous optional updates that will be released on even-numbered months, according to Gina Bentley, the Servicing and Support Program Manager for Microsoft's Vertical Industries and Embedded Windows (VIEW) group.

As Bentley wrote, those who already are downloading security updates from the Embedded Communications Extranet (ECE) can take a look and see if they are interested in the optional updates. A recent posting by Lynda Allen, Microsoft Embedded Program Manager, indicates that an optional update is now available for Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 2, Feature Pack 2007, and Update Rollup 1.0.

According to the post, the update includes KB 942525, for Windows Media Player 10. This adds a registration resource to the Media Player component in order to facilitate the playing of MPEG-4 content, Microsoft says.

Also included is KB 942527, for Group Policy Core Support Files. This is said to add a component dependency to the Group Policy Core Support Files component, in order to automatically bring the Group Policy Core component and its resources into a runtime.

As Allen writes, the optional bimonthly updates are separate from any monthly security updates that might also posted, and should only be installed after the latter.

You can read Allen's blog posting on the Windows XP Embedded blog, here. To obtain the October 2007 optional supplement update, access the ECE site, here (ECE user name and password required).
