Skype has released version 1.0 of its Windows software for peer-to-peer (P2P) telephony including "SkypeOut", which allows users to call any phone in the world at local calling rates. Skype 1.0 also includes a new file transfer feature and other enhancements.

A new beta version of "Skype for Pocket PC," which includes the SkypeOut feature, is also available.

Skype says its VoIP software is based on the same P2P technology as the popular file sharing service KaZaa. One advantage of the P2P approach over server-based VoIP is that calls between Skype users anywhere in the world are free. Other advantages claimed for Skype include:
        • Higher voice quality and call completion rates
        • Works with all firewalls, NAT and routers -- nothing to configure
        • Friends list shows you when friends are online and ready to talk or chat
        • Conference calls are easy to set up and also free
        • Calls are encrypted end-to-end.
According to Skype, more than 7 million people in over 170 countries have signed up since the company launched its Internet telephony software last year, and the company averages more than 400,000 active users at any point in time.

Further details on Skype's free peer-to-peer VoIP software for Pocket PC are here.

In a related announcement, Skype recently signed agreements with four carriers to provide worldwide call termination services for Skype users. The four carriers are: COLT, iBasis, Level 3, and Teleglobe.
