Sealevel Systems claims its new PC/104 serial port module is the first to include 16 RS-485 interfaces. The SIO-104+16.485 automatically handles RS-485 driver enable, to simplify communications by making the RS-485 ports appear as standard COM ports to a host operating system.

It supports Windows and Windows CE 5.0, among other OSes.

The new multi-port serial board utilizes a 40-pin header for physical interconnection, and it features 128-byte FIFOs for fast, error-free communication up to 921.6K bps, according to the company. It ships with the company's SeaCOM suite of drivers for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP; a Windows CE 5.0 driver is also available.

Also provided with the board is WinSSD, a full-featured application providing what the company calls powerful testing and diagnostic capabilities for assistance in development and troubleshooting, bit error rate testing, throughput monitoring, loopback tests, and transmitting test pattern messages. SeaLevel says it also provides application notes and technical details to simplify installation in systems based on DOS, Linux or QNX.

The SIO-104+16.485 is available from stock with a $349 price tag in "low-volume quantities," for the standard operating temperature range of 0 to 70 degrees C, according to SeaLevel. An extended temperature range model for 40 to +85 degrees C is also available.
