The PS-8851 runs on a 1 GHz Via Eden M processor with up to 1 GB of DDR SDRAM. Storage options include either CompactFlash or a 3.5-inch disk drive. Protech says a convenient rear door design simplifies cable routing and quick access to multiple I/O ports including 10/100 Ethernet, two USB 2.0, four serial, LPT, and PS/2 keyboard and mouse.

The angle of the 15-inch XVGA display is adjustable between 0 and 51 degrees. Numerous peripheral options are available, including a variety of customer-facing displays, according to Protech. A triple track magnetic card reader module can be added, as well as an "i-button" key reader for user identification and authorization.
