PalmOne to use Windows Mobile in a future smartphone?

palmOne, creator of the Palm Pilot and Treo smartphone, is reportedly denying rumors that it is developing a Pocket PC version of the Treo. But the company didn't entirely rule out the possibility either. The rumors apparently resulted from comments made by a representative of investment banking firm Needham & Co., following an analyst briefing.

MobilePipeline.com quoted, Marlene Somsak, palmOne's vice president of communications, as saying, "We don't comment on rumors or speculation, but we do believe that the people at Needham misunderstood because nobody from palmOne expressed those sentiments at the analyst meetings."

Despite that comment, Somsak reportedly went on to characterize palmOne as a "platform-agnostic company," saying, "We are open to evaluating products using additional operating systems," Somsak said, according to the MobilePipeline story.

"That's additional, as in not replacement, if doing so would not grow the marketplace or meet customer needs that aren't being address," Somsak reportedly added.

Huh? We figure we'll just have to wait and see.
