Paragon Software says NTFS for Windows CE is based on its "unique Universal File System Driver (UFSD) technology, specially developed to provide full high performance access ... to volumes of the most popular file systems." Previously offered for Linux and Macintosh OSX, the technology provides full read/write access as well as disk formatting, the company says.
Noting that the standard FAT32 file system on Windows CE cannot handle files larger than 4GB, Paragon says its software will let mobile phones, handhelds, PNDs (personal navigation devices), automotive multimedia devices, and other products store content such as HD video. Though not mentioned by the company, another possible application might be Windows CE-based NAS (network attached storage) devices.
Tom Fedro, president of Paragon Software, stated, "There is no question that the popularity of Windows CE devices is growing; however, file system incompatibility can be a pacing issue for a wide range of consumer products. Delivering support for NTFS under Windows CE bridges this gap, and our technology will become a catalyst for unleashing a whole new range of applications."
Paragon's NTFS for Windows CE follows the release of a similarly named product earlier this month by Tuxera. For more details on the Tuxera offering, see our earlier coverage, here.
