According to the companies, security currently in place for cross-operator Wi-Fi roaming is limited to protecting the user's login and session information from the mobile device to the hotspot operator. In contrast, iPass and Meetinghouse plan to implement end-to-end protection across the Internet -- all the way from the device to the enterprise.
Specifically, the companies say their joint efforts will focus on:
- Integrating Meetinghouse's AEGIS Client security technology with the iPass iPassConnect universal client to enable secure, standards-based access to the enterprise from 802.1x- or WPA-capable networks.
- Developing end-to-end, server-based, network authentication that uses TTLS, a tunneled Extended Authentication Protocol (EAP), to secure mobile networks without the need for expensive overhauls of enterprise back-end user access servers.
- Developing an industry demonstration showing end-to-end, server based network authentication solutions using the PEAP method of EAP.
- Coordinating efforts within the Trusted Computer Group (TCG), Trusted Network Connect (TNC) sub-group to ensure endpoint security with system interoperability and integrity.
