Pharos Science specializes in GPS devices and software, and previously released three GPS-equipped Windows phones, the Traveler 137, the Traveler 127, and the Traveler 117. The company's new 565 (right) is a relatively rare bird, however, in that it runs Windows Mobile 6.5, but is a PDA without any telephony capabilities. We're told that the market for such stand-alone devices is fading, but the 565 carves out a niche by offering IP54-rated resistance to liquids and dust. The ruggedized PDA also survives drops of up to five feet, Pharos claims.
While it may not offer a cellular modem, the 565 does include 802.11a/b/g wireless networking (along with Bluetooth 2.0), so web browsing is possible as it would be on any other Windows Mobile device. According to Pharos, the PDA also offers an IrDA infrared port -- not so common these days -- plus an RS232 port and a USB client interface.
Meanwhile, the 565's GPS receiver (chipset unspecified) is said to offer cold starts within a minute, warm starts in less than 35 seconds, and hot starts in less than three seconds. The device offers positioning accuracy down to 3.28 yards (3 meters), Pharos adds. (While no details were provided, the 565 presumably ships with Pharos' own GPS applications.)
According to Pharos, the 565 offers a 3.5-inch touchscreen display with 320 x 240 pixel resolution and a Marvell PXA310 processor clocked at 624MHz. The device comes with 256MB of RAM, 512MB of flash storage, and a microSD expansion slot, the company adds.
Specifications listed by Pharos for the 565 include the following:
According to Pharos, the 565 is available now for approximately $530. More information may be found on the company's website, here.
