Spb Software House has released a plug-in that enhances the personal information manager (PIM) on Windows Mobile Pocket PCs, it says. Spb Diary is described as a "powerful replacement" for the standard PIM plug-ins for the Pocket PC's Today screen, including calendar, tasks, and contacts functions, according to the company.

Spb conducted a survey of Pocket PC users last September that showed that 85 percent of them use their devices as information organizers. "However, the standard Pocket PC tools for handling PIM data have turned out to be underwhelming at best," according to the company, "especially concerning the most important part -- PIM plug-ins for the Today screen."

"A standard Pocket PC offers only minimally functional Today plug-ins for appointments and tasks and no plug-in for contacts at all," the company adds. For example, the standard appointment plug-in shows only the next appointment for today, and other appointments can only be accessed by opening the Calender application, according to Spb. Likewise, the task plug-in shows only the number of active tasks and tasks of high priority, Spb says.

Spb Diary provides three Today plug-ins -- for calendar, tasks, and contacts -- organized in tabs. According to Spb, this approach saves useful screen space, and lets a user access most PIM data directly from the Today screen without having to open the corresponding PIM applications.

The company says that Diary works with Pocket Outlook, Agenda Fusion and Pocket Informant. A 15-day free trial is available via download.
