        Pocket PC girds for battle

Talla-Tech recently announced that it has received an order from the C4 Systems business unit of General Dynamics for more than $3 million worth of its Rugged PDA (R-PDAs) Pocket PC based handheld computing devices.

According to Talla-Tech, the R-PDA "provid[es] end users with a powerful computing device sized to fit in the soldiers cargo pocket." Utilizing "the latest in commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technology, [the] R-PDA provides a powerful low-cost rugged handheld computer," the company said. Judging from the look (enlarged photo) and ruggedization of the R-PDA, we suspect that when they say "low-cost," they are measuring it by U.S. military norms.

Talla-Tech said the R-PDAs will be delivered to General Dynamics over a period of six months beginning in July, 2003. The units will be resold by General Dynamics as the "Joint Pocket-Sized Forward Entry Device," with software to allow it to direct artillery fire, according to an article published by Knight Ridder News service earlier this year.
