Smartfeed.org has released the beta version of a podcast receiver that runs on Windows Mobile Pocket PCs. Smart Feed is said to be the first "Podcatcher" to bring podcasting to both the Windows Mobile smartphone and Pocket PC, leveraging the same underlying .NET Compact Framework-based infrastructure.

Smart Feed developer Kevin Cawley says he first built the package for the Windows Mobile smartphone platform several months ago. After getting many emails from Pocket PC enthusiasts, he decided to build a Pocket PC version.

According to Smartfeed.org, features of Smart Feed include:
        • Locates podcasts using the OPML directory, to access "thousands of freely available podcasts"
        • Resumes download automatically, if Internet connection is interrupted
        • Receives recommendations based on the day's most popular downloads
        • Manages a podcast library on the mobile device, with an "intuitive and easy-to-use" interface
        • Schedules automatic updates of the podcasts in the library
"The Pocket PC version works like a champ," Cawley says. "In fact, I think I like it better than the smartphone version. The UI on the Pocket PC just seems more intuitive."

Smart Feed is available for free download here.

        A few words about podcasting

Podcasting enables the publication and distribution of online content in a subscription-like syndication format as it becomes available. While most podcasts are made available as audio in MP3 format, other types of files, such as video, can also be podcast. The content is downloaded to a PC or mobile device rather than streamed, allowing listening or viewing at the user's convenience.
