        Portable Media Center -- why bother?

        Not everyone is bullish on Microsoft's Portable Media Center (PMC) extensions to Windows CE. While Amazon.com is taking advance orders for the first PMC devices from Creative Labs and Samsung, an article recently posted at NotebookReview.com suggests they may not be all they're cracked up to be.




        "If you have a Pocket PC or an ultra portable notebook you can already accomplish a lot of the things this device offers, plus a whole lot more, with a device of similar size," writes Andrew Baxter. Pocket PCs are smaller, cheaper, and can already play video using SD or CF storage cards, according to Baxter. Plus "you can use it to, gasp, do work!"

        Finally, Baxter asks, "Do any of us really need to be watching TV and movies everywhere? Who even cares or wants to?"
