Porting Pocket PC games to square screens

Games developed for the rectangular screens of early Pocket PCs do not run well on today's square-screen Pocket PCs, a problem that has motivated Microsoft to discuss the matter on its developer website. The article addresses some of the problems encountered when porting 320x240 pixel games to 240x240 pixel screens, along with various solutions and the trade-offs involved in those solutions.

Incorporating assumptions about screen size into a gaming application has adverse results when the screen of the gaming platform has a different format. "Game developers need to keep multiple resolutions in mind when they develop full-screen games if the games are to appear and run correctly on different screens," says Microsoft's Brian Cross. "There are many techniques to write games that work well on both portrait and square screens, but the techniques that work best largely depend on the games themselves."

The Windows Mobile operating system for Pocket PCs has supported square formats since the Second Edition published in 2003.
