CDG Europe has introduced a Windows XP Embedded-based "smart client" that's said to provide more flexibility than the typical thin client. The Cranberry SC20 is no bigger than a paperback book and is claimed to use just one-tenth the power of a typical PC.

The Cranberry SC20, said to measure a compact 5.5 x 5.5 x 1.4 inches, is described by the company as a "fusion of thin and fat client technologies." Unlike some thin clients, it supports USB memory sticks, digital camera, CD/DVD writers, and mobile phone synchronization, according to CDG.

Like thin clients, however, the Cranberry SC20 supports application virtualization and streaming, the company said. It reportedly supports application streaming via Microsoft SoftGrid, Citrix, and Thinstall.

The Cranberry SC20 operates without a fan, thanks to its low-power AMD Geode LX800 processor clocked at 500 MHz. Also employed is the CS5536 "companion chip," a southbridge providing audio capabilities, USB ports, and a variety of other functions.

CDG says its device comes with 512 MB of DDR 400 MHz SODIMM RAM, expandable to 1 GB. The Cranberry SC20 is also offered with either solid-state memory or with a 2.5-inch hard drive ranging from 40 GB to 250 GB in capacity.

Features and specifications listed by the company include:
        • Processor -- AMD Geode LX800, clocked at 500 MHz
        • Memory -- 512 MB DDR 400 MHz SODIMM RAM, expandable to 1 GB
        • Display -- not detailed, but a VGA port is provided
        • Networking -- 10/100 Ethernet
        • Other I/O:
          • 4 x USB 2.0 (front mounted)
          • line out; microphone in; headphone out
        • Dimensions -- 5.5 x 5.5 x 1.4 inches
        • Power -- 12 VDC, supplied by 100-240 VAC adapter
According to CDG, the Cranberry SC20 is specifically designed to work with RES Wisdom software. This is said to provide features such as disk write control and automated power on/off, allowing the device to be turned on in order to receive software updates and then powered down in order to save energy, the company says.

The Cranberry SC20 appears to be available now. Pricing was not disclosed.
