The virus protection was implemented using the
Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) feature of Windows XP Embedded, according to Advantech. EWF write-protects one or more partitions on the system's mass storage devices. Viruses can be effectively blocked by write-protecting the system partition. EWF is password protected and can be turned off to install software upgrades.
Fast boot up is accomplished using the
Hibernate Once Resume Many (HORM) utility. HORM allows developers to define a hibernated state that quickly wakes up the system without having to perform a full OS boot, according to Advantech. EWF works with HORM to maintain a "hibernation file" that quickly boots the system from a constant known hibernated state.
