Preloaded Windows XPe images boast fast boot, virus protection

Advantech is offering preloaded fast-booting and virus-protected Windows XP Embedded operating system images for its x86-compatible SBCs (single board computers) and Panel PCs. The operating system enhancements were achieved without requiring third-party software, the company says.

The virus protection was implemented using the Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) feature of Windows XP Embedded, according to Advantech. EWF write-protects one or more partitions on the system's mass storage devices. Viruses can be effectively blocked by write-protecting the system partition. EWF is password protected and can be turned off to install software upgrades.

Fast boot up is accomplished using the Hibernate Once Resume Many (HORM) utility. HORM allows developers to define a hibernated state that quickly wakes up the system without having to perform a full OS boot, according to Advantech. EWF works with HORM to maintain a "hibernation file" that quickly boots the system from a constant known hibernated state.
