Arianesoft has released a programming language and toolsuite that runs on, and targets, Windows Mobile Pocket PCs. Pocket Programming Language (PPL) comes with an integrated development environment (IDE) that includes graphic and sound APIs for game development, along with a form-builder, debugger, and syntax highlighting editor,...

        according to the company.

Arianesoft describes PPL as "fully object-oriented," and claims it offers an easier approach than most languages. The language syntax is described as a mixture of C, Pascal, and Basic. Interestingly, there are no variable types in PPL. "Everything is fully transparent, from string to char to integer or double," the company says.

The PPL Integrated Development Environment (PIDE) runs on desktops as well as Pocket PCs. It includes a project manager, full source code syntax-highlighting, a file explorer and a Visual Form Builder. Graphical debug facilities include a profiler and variable trace, according to Arianesoft. Applications can be built for the desktop as well as the Pocket PC.

PPL's GameAPI incorporates game-oriented features such as a 2D physics engine, pixel shaders, and collision detection. Arianesoft claims that programmers need not learn how to move or resize sprites, because PPL does it automatically. Additionally, game movement is independent of processor speed, according to the company.

PPL is offered in four versions. A "lite" version is available for free download. The standard version is priced at $40, while the Pro version goes for $80. A soon-to-be-released SDK version will bundle Pro with a scripting library for $140, Arianesoft says.
