Qualcomm has licensed Microsoft's Windows Media technology and plans to integrate the Windows Media Audio (WMA) and Windows Media Video (WMV) codecs into the Qtv video decoder software that supports its latest chipsets for 3G mobile handsets.

As a result, users will be able to playback and stream WMA and WMV content on wireless devices incorporating Qtv.

Qualcomm describes Qtv as a "feature-rich" software video decoder that enables mobile devices to stream, download and play back multimedia content. Qtv is part of the company's Launchpad suite of integrated applications for advanced multimedia, connectivity, position location, user interface and removable storage functionality, including gpsOne, said to be the world's most broadly deployed assisted-GPS handset technology.

Support for Windows Media is expected to be available in the first quarter of calendar 2005, beginning with Qualcomm's MSM6250, MSM6500, and MSM6550 Mobile Station Modem (MSM) wideband CDMA (WCDMA), and CDMA2000 1x EV-DO chipsets.

Microsoft calls Windows Media "one of the highest-quality, most secured and comprehensive digital media formats available for streaming and download-and-play applications." It is said to be supported on more than 700 devices, including DVD players, home theater systems, car stereos, and handhelds.
