Panel PCs have wealth of audio outputs

Quanmax has introduced two panel PCs that use 45nm Core 2 Duo processors and DDR3 memory. The 15-inch KPC-1590 and 17-inch KPC-1790 include hard disk or SSD (solid state disk) storage, touchscreens, and 7:1 channel audio output, according to the company.

Quanmax didn't suggest a target market for its new panel PCs. However, the devices' touchscreens, graphics capabilities, and impressive complement of audio outputs suggest that, rather than being related just to the usual HMI (human machine interface) applications, the KPC-1590 and KPC-1790 could be appropriate for Windows-based home entertainment setups.

The panel PCs include amplified stereo audio output, via two RCA jacks, plus six 3.5mm jacks that carry mic in, line in, line out, center, subwoofer, side surround, and back surround signals. For video, the KPC-1590 has both DVI-I and HDMI ports, according to Quanmax.

Also featured on the panel PC are two USB 2.0 ports, a gigabit Ethernet port, and two serial ports. A DB9 connector relays four digital inputs and four digital outputs, Quanmax adds.

According to Quanmax, the KPC-1590 and KPC-1790 employ Intel's GM45 Express chipset, the GM45 GMCH (graphics memory controller hub) and ICH (I/O controller hub) 9M, via which they can support the Core 2 Duo T9400 clocked at 2.53GHz, or the Core 2 Duo P8400 clocked at 2.26GHz. The devices are also capable of accepting 2.0GHz Celeron 575 CPUs, the company adds. A single SODIMM socket in the panel PCs is said to accept up to 2GB of DDR3 RAM.

As for mass storage, the KPC-1590 and KPC-1790 include SATA ports and a 2.5-inch drive bay that's capable of accepting either hard disks or SSDs. A slim DVD drive (read-only) is also included, the company says.

Apart from dimensions, the only difference between the KPC-1590 and the KPC-1790 is that the former has a 15-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, and the latter has a 17-inch touchscreen whose resolution is 1280 x 1024 pixels. Brightness ratings are 250-nit and 350-nit, respectively.
