The unit's firmware is also "Gen 2 field upgradeable," enabling the units to be easily upgraded to new RFID standards without having to recall them from the field.

The MXE-RFID is based on a 206MHz Intel SA-1110 processor. The Windows CE 3.0 version has 32MB of RAM and 32MB of Flash. The Windows CE 4.2 version has 64MB of RAM and 64MB of Flash. Both models boast 6.5-inch diagonal, 1/2 VGA (640x240) displays, which are available either as transmissive indoor-readable color, or transflective sunlight-readable monochrone, LCDs. Expansion slots include both a Type I/II CompactFlash slot and a Type I/II/III PCMCIA v1.2 slot that supports 802.11b radios with built-in antennas.
The device includes "keyboard wedge" software that places valid EPC data directly into the keyboard buffer so that any off-the-shelf application can access the data without complex development, according to LXI. Additionally, the company supplies an API (application programming interface) which can be used to implement custom application development.
About EPC and EPCglobalEPC (Electronic Product Code) is the RFID equivalent of the UPC developed for barcodes. Like the UPC, the EPC identifies manufacturer and product, but it has additional digits that are used for a serial number to uniquely identify individual items. EPC is one element of the EPCglobal Network, a set of technologies that enable immediate, automatic identification and sharing of information on items in the supply chain.
EPCglobal is a joint venture between EAN International and the Uniform Code Council (UCC). It is a non-profit organization formed to establish and support the Electronic Product Code (EPC) Network as the global standard for immediate, automatic, and accurate identification of any item in the supply chain of any company, in any industry, anywhere in the world, according to the organization's website. The objective is to drive global adoption of the EPCglobal Network.
LXE is a member of EPCglobal.
