Mobiforms has released an update to its rapid application development (RAD) tool for building Java database applications that run on Windows CE and Windows Mobile Pocket PCs. Mobiforms version 3.02 adds certification for IBM's J9 Java environment, also known as the WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment, according to the...

MobiForms includes a graphical drag-and-drop development tool called MobiForms Developer. The tool's output consists of a special version of XML called "Forms Mark-up Language," in files with a FML extension, according to the company. The FML file is both the source code for a mobile application and the file that the MobiForms runtime interpreter uses to run the application.

Other new features of this latest release include a new drawing object type that supports sketching and signature capture, and support for plain ASCII files, according to Mobiforms.

J9 is IBM's implementation of the Java Platform Micro Edition (J2ME), which supports applications running on mobile and embedded devices such as smartphones, PDAs, and set-top boxes (STBs). In addition to J9, MobiForms continues to support other Java environments such as Jbed, Jeode, and Mysaifu on Windows Mobile and PersonalJava on Symbian devices.

Mobiforms v3.02 is currently available for download on the company's website, for about $178. There does not appear to be a free trial version.
