Bachmann Software is shipping software package that offers remote access to PC files from smartphones and WiFi-equipped Pocket PCs running a Windows Mobile operating system. Dubbed FilePoint Exchange for Windows Mobile, it lets users connect to and browse files on their home or work computer, using a remote desktop search feature...

        based on Google Desktop Search.

FilePoint Exchange maintains "full" security through a "system of passwords" and "strong encryption," according to the firm, as materials are wirelessly downloaded to the handheld, according to the company.

FilePoint Exchange offers handheld users two methods for locating important files:
        • Network Browsing, which works just like Microsoft Internet Explorer on a Microsoft Windows-based PC, gives users "a friendly way" to browse commonly accessed folders and their contents on local hard drives or mapped network drives.

        • Desktop Search allows users to enter keywords on their handheld, and receive back a list of the most relevant matching files.

"This remote access tool is a powerful complement to Windows Mobile," says Jeff McKean, product manager, Mobile & Embedded Devices Division at Microsoft, "enabling business users to stay connected to their most critical information -- and allowing functionality to view and edit these documents any time, anywhere."

FilePoint Exchange is available for a limited time at an introductory price of $39.99.
