Report: "Voice over WiFi" coming soon to a handset near you

Several companies are poised to advance the goal of ubiquitous voice coverage using whatever form of wireless connection makes sense from a given location, according to a new report from ABI Research. Dedicated "VoWiFi" (voice over WiFi) handsets from Vonage will soon allow users to place VoIP calls wirelessly, either through a home WiFi access point or through one of Boingo's 11,000 public WiFi hotspots...

        worldwide, ABI says.

But, according to ABI, the initial Vonage offering will have some drawbacks. In particular, users will have to carry the Vonage VoIP handset plus a cellular phone to get full coverage.

However, the situation will soon improve, ABI says, as Motorola is expected to release dual-mode (cellular/WiFi) handsets for corporate use by the end of 2004 or early 2005. ABI expects consumer models to follow, as chip prices erode. "These and similar developments now taking shape will facilitate a more rapid uptake of VoIP in the residential market," predicts ABI.

Motorola earlier this year introduced the CN620 Mobile Office Device (pictured at right) that runs Windows CE 4.2 and supports both GSM/GPRS cellular and 802.11a WiFi communications. The device is said to be capable of seamlessly switching between WLAN and cellular modes when the user walks from inside to outside of a building.

ABI's study, "Residential VoIP Markets", explores the drivers, barriers, and opportunities in the broadband VoIP market, according to the ABI. Forecasts include subscribers, subscriber revenue, CPE shipments, and CPE revenue.
