(Click here for a slightly larger view of the Tyco Elo 17A2)The Elo 17A2 has a 17-inch display with 1280 x 1024 resolution and will eventually be offered with a choice of four different touchscreen technologies: the economical five-wire resistive technology (the most common touchscreen type), CarrollTouch infrared, IntelliTouch surface wave, and acoustic pulse recognition.
The CarrollTouch technology uses an array of vertical and horizontal IR sensors. As a result, it requires no screen overlay, and has no moving mechanical parts or sensor that can be broken, Tyco says.
The IntelliTouch surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology uses ultrasonic waves that pass over the panel. A touted advantage here is a vandal-resistant all-glass screen.
Finally, acoustic pulse technology works by recognizing the sound created when the screen is touched at a particular position. Again, the screen is all-glass and works even when scratched. The technology has excellent "dragging properties," according to Tyco.
The Elo 17A2 has a removable base and is VESA-mountable. There's also a VGA output for a second, external display. This can be either a standard display or a touchscreen, providing digital signage potential, Tyco suggests.
The fanless Elo 17A2 uses a 1GHz Celeron M processor, along with the Intel 915GME chipset and ICH6 southbridge. Two memory slots provide for up to 1.5GB of DDR2 memory (512KB is standard).
Storage is provided by a 2.5-inch, 40GB hard drive, and a Type I CompactFlash slot is also included. Both hard drive and CompactFlash slot are accessible via a slide-out drawer, according to Tyco. In addition, the Elo 17A2 has a type IIIA (60 x 51 x2.4mm) Mini PCI slot.
The Elo 17A2 provides cash drawer connectivity, plus a variety of field-installable options, Tyco says. Options include: a three-track magnetic stripe reader (MSR) for credit, ID and loyalty card transactions; a customer-facing display to verify those transactions; biometric fingerprint recognition for increased security; a 3-watt speaker bar that can also house an optional line or omni-directional barcode scanner; and a DVD drive.

The Elo 17A2 is available now, according to Tyco. However, the versions with acoustic pulse recognition and infrared touchscreens will not be on sale until summer 2008.
