Getac has announced a rugged PDA claimed to withstand up to 2,000 1.6-foot drops. The PS535E meets MIL-STD-801F standards for shock resistance, runs Windows Mobile 5, has a 400MHz ARM-based processor and 2GB of built-in Flash, and includes Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS capabilities.

With a case measuring 5.7 x 3.3 x 1.2 inches, the PS535E is not notably larger than other PDAs, nor is its 10.6 ounce weight overly hefty. Nonetheless, the device apparently incorporates effective shock mounting, since it can withstand up to 2,000 1.6-foot drops without harm, according to Getac.

The PS535 is rated to meet MIL-STD-801F standards, including the method 516.5 test for shock resistance, and method 514.5 for vibration resistance. It also meets IEC-529 standards for water and dust resistance, Getac says.

Inside its tough shell, the PS535 is a standard Windows Mobile 5 Professional PDA, with such typical features as Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile, and Internet Explorer Mobile. It has a "sunlight-readable" 3.5-inch QVGA touchscreen display.

The PS535E does not include wide area networking capabilities, but users can browse the web via the device's 802.11b/g wireless LAN functionality. Other wireless interfaces include Bluetooth 2.0 and an "embedded high-sensitivity GPS receiver" with a connector for an external GPS antenna.

The PS535E uses a Samsung S3C2440A processor, with 64MB of RAM and 2GB of flash. Storage can be expanded using the device's SD card slot. A microphone input and line output are available.

Features and specifications listed by Getac for the PS535E include:
