Psion Teklogix has introduced a rugged device that is positioned as a PDA, though it also offers optional cellular voice and data communications. Running either Windows CE or Windows Mobile, the Ikon has a full VGA display and survives drops from 5 feet onto polished concrete, according to the company.

Like Psion's Workabout Pro announced earlier this year, the Ikon unusually offers a choice of operating systems: Windows CE 5.0 or Windows Mobile 6.0 Classic or Professional editions. These run on a Marvell PXA270 clocked at 624 MHz, according to the company.

The device comes with 128 MB of RAM and 128 MB of flash memory, according to Psion. Storage may be expanded via the Ikon's Micro SD slot.

The Ikon appears to come with a variety of purchaser-selectable options. For example, its 3.7-inch VGA display is teamed with the choice of a QWERTY keyboard or a numeric keyboard, both backlit.

Similarly, 802.11b/g wireless networking and Bluetooth are both available options. Wide area networking can be supported simultaneously via the device's GSM/GPRS, EDGE, and UMTS/HSDPA capabilities, according to the company.

The GPS-equipped Ikon is said to offer a variety of data capture options. For example, there is an integral 2 megapixel camera. A 1D scanner and imager are also available.

Finally, Psion touts the "highest battery capacity in the market." This is said to provide all-day operation on a single charge.
