Intermec announced that its 700 and 700 Color Series of mobile computers -- running Microsoft's Pocket PC embedded operating system -- have become the first rugged handheld devices to be approved for voice transmission on AT&T's GSM/GPRS wireless network.

"Our customers now can choose an extremely rugged device to take on the road, to the factory floor or wherever they need voice and data capabilities," commented Laura Johnson, director, mobile multimedia services for AT&T Wireless. "We are glad to add the strength and durability of Intermec's handheld devices to our list of voice-certified products."

Intermec's 700 Color handheld is based on an Intel 400MHz XScale processor and provides a large, full-color display and a unique imager suitable for reading barcodes (including 2D symbologies), taking photographs and capturing signatures. The device is also unique in its ability to integrate up to three integrated wireless communication options within a single device, including an 802.11b radio, a GSM/GPRS WAN radio, and a power-managed Bluetooth radio.
