        Rugged Windows CE PDA fits in shirt pocket

        At just 5.8 x 3.4 x 1.4 inches in size, Intermec's new rugged handheld scanner is small enough to fit in a shirt pocket. The CN2 runs Windows CE 4.2, incorporates Wi-Fi and a bar code scanner, and features an ergonomic design that supports single-handed operation.

        The CN2 is based on a 400 MHz Intel PXA255 processor equipped with 128 MB of SDRAM and 64 MB of Flash. Its elastomeric keypad is available in two formats -- the 9-key layout shown above, as well as a 17-key numeric layout. It incorporates built-in 802.11b WiFi and a 1D linear imager that supports all popular 1D symbologies, according to Intermec.

        The CN2 incorporates Intermec's SmartSystem remote device manager. According to Intermec, SmartSystem allows configuration, routine maintenance and application software updates, security adjustments, and device settings to be performed automatically and managed remotely.

        Intermec lists the following key features and specifications for the CN2:

          • Security protocols -- WEP, WPA, 802.1x (EAP-TLS, TTLS, LEAP, PEAP)

          • USB version 1.1 (through charging dock)
          • Snap-on adapter for DB9 interface to serial or printer peripherals
        • Bar Code Scanning:
          • 1D linear imager
          • Supported codes -- Code 39, I 2 of 5, S 2 of 5, EAN/EAN128, Code 128, Codabar, UPC.
          • Scan Activation -- left/right/top scan buttons, with continuous scan mode.
        • Software:
          • Operating system -- Windows CE 4.2
          • Development Environments -- Embedded Visual C++ 4.0, .NET Compact Framework (VB .NET and C#)
          • Browser support -- IE6 compatible
          • Software Development Kit -- Supports device-specific features and bar code scanning
          • Bundled productivity applications -- WordPad and Imager scan demo program

          • IP64 dust and water sealing rating
          • Survives multiple 4 foot drops to steel or concrete
          • Tested to MIL-PRF-28800F for shock and vibration

        Intermec is taking orders for the CN2 now, with delivery expected in the second quarter.
