"Initially, we developed the Durateq for a lead customer with demanding handheld requirements. Commercial handhelds were too fragile while rugged, military-spec handhelds were too bulky and too expensive," explained Softeq president Chris Howard. "With the Durateq, we've combined the best features of both products: compatibility and durability in a small form factor."
The device features a ruggedized, high-impact sealed case with rubber overmold, along with shock, dust and splash resistant construction, according to Softeq. It has built-in 802.11 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless interfaces as well as secured, tamper-proof SD and CF card slots.
Available options include a magnetic stripe reader, a bar code scanner, and a GPS module. Additionally, an optional multi-unit charger can support up to five handheld units at once.
The base model of the Durateq 3100 is expected to be available in September from both HP and Softeq, with a list price of $899.
