The LANpoint 7 features an unusual industrial design, with a widescreen 640 x 240 display. It includes a 69-key QWERTY keyboard, with an epoxy overcoat to protect legends from being rubbed off, and the company says it will provide templates to assist companies that want to customize the nameplate or keyboard overlays.
The unit's programmable function keys can be easily configured for use as soft-keys, repetitive data string entry, or menu selectors using a configuration utility, according to Intelligent Instrumentation. Four LED indicators provide status feedback, and four additional LED indicators are user-definable.
The device's standard housing is drip-proof to the NEMA-12 standard, the company says. A waterproof housing that would even permit the LANpoint 7 to be hosed down is one of many mounting options, which also include stands, wall mounts, and brackets that can secure the device to a forklift's roll cage.

(Click to enlarge)Other options are said to include RFID, barcode readers, magnetic strip readers, and fingerprint recognition. A Type I/II/III PCMCIA slot allows installation of either a 802.11b/g wireless LAN card, or a customer-supplied Sierra Wireless GPRS/GMS/EDGE WAN card.

The company says the device can be used as a thin client, or programmed with Visual Studio .NET 2003 Professional, Visual Studio .NET 2005 Professional, or Visual C++ 4.0. It reportedly is also offered with a kiosk-style browser that provides access to selected Web pages while preventing unauthorized browsing.
