Juniper Systems has released a rugged handheld designed for in-the-field information management. The pocket-sized Archer Field PC runs Windows Mobile 5.0, and targets a broad range of field applications such as environmental consulting, land surveying, rangeland monitoring, and wildlife resources, according to the company.

The Archer Field PC is based on a 520 MHz PXA270, along with 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of Flash memory. According to Juniper, RAM is only used to execute programs. All data, applications, and the OS are stored in Flash. The device's 3.5-inch QVGA (320 x 240 resolution) active matrix TFT display operates in either portrait or landscape mode.

The unit is housed in a waterproof, shockproof magnesium case sealed to IP67 with an "easy-to-grip" elastomer overmold. Fully-sealed, user-accessible CF and SD card slots support expansion capabilities such as GPS, wireless, and scanners. An optional extended cap is available for cameras, cellular modems, and other large CF/SD devices.

A customizable communications module supports a serial port, mini USB host and device, and a 12 VDC jack for power input and battery charging. The intelligent, field-replaceable Li-ion battery pack operates for more than 20 hours on a single charge, according to Juniper.

        Standard software includes:
        • Internet Explorer
        • Mobile Outlook
        • Activesync 4.0 client and desktop
        • Mobile Office -- Word, Excel, Powerpoint
        • Terminal services client -- controls a desktop PC from the Archer
        • Voice control and recorder
        • Handwriting recognition
For custom application development, Juniper offers a Windows Mobile software development kit (SDK) development using embedded Visual C++ 4.0 and Visual Studio 2005.

Price and availability were not disclosed.
