Motion Computing announced a rugged Windows tablet PC targeting healthcare, construction, field sales, and government. The "J3400" has a 12.1-inch touchscreen, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, HDD (hard disk drive) or SDD (solid state drive) storage, a fingerprint reader, and optional mobile broadband,...

        Motion says.

As the photo above suggests, Motion Computing's J3400 is not as overtly ruggedized as some other tablet PCs. However, the device is said to meet the MIL-STD-810F standard for surviving three-foot drops, and it has an IP52 rating for resistance to dust and liquids. This toughness is achieved by chemically strengthened glass, a magnesium-alloy internal frame, and a rubberized bottom housing, the company says.

The J3400 has a 12.1-inch display with WXGA (1280 x 800) resolution, available in a standard version or a sunlight-viewable "View Anywhere" configuration. The device also includes three microphones, so that a stereo pair can be correctly oriented toward the user in both portrait and landscape modes, Motion Computing adds.

The J3400 is offered with a choice of two Intel Core 2 Duo processors, the 1.2GHz SU9300 or the 1.4GHz SU9400. These "Penryn" CPUs have 10 Watt TDPs, 3MB second-level caches, and 800Mhz frontside buses, according to Intel. They're combined here with the GS45 northbridge and ICH9M southbridge, says Motion Computing.

According to Motion Computing, the J3400 is expandable to 4GB of DDR3 memory, via two SODIMM slots. Meanwhile, mass storage is provided by a 5400rpm, 1.8-inch HDD in either 80GB or 120GB capacities, or by an optional 64GB SDD.

Wireless connectivity on the tablet includes both 802.11a/b/g/n wireless networking and optional Bluetooth 2.1. Motion Computing also cites an optional cellular modem employing Qualcomm's Gobi chipset. This chipset allows users to connect to HSPA (high-speed packet access) networks, generally found in Europe, and EVDO (evolution data optimized) networks, generally found in the U.S, according to Qualcomm.

The left side of the J3400 (pictured above) sports a microphone input, headphone output, gigabit Ethernet port, two USB 2.0 ports, and a VGA output. The right side (also shown above) includes features such as a pen storage bay, a fingerprint reader, and access to optional Express Card 34 and Smart Card slots.

On the bottom of the tablet, there's a docking connector, designed to interface the tablet with one of two optional accessories. The "FlexDock" (below left) is a desktop stand that includes a VGA port, a DVI-D port, four USB ports, audio I/O, and a battery charging bay. The "mobile keyboard" (below right), meanwhile, attaches magnetically to the back of the tablet, providing a touchpad and a full size keyboard that opens and closes just like that on a notebook, says Motion Computing.

Finally, the J3400 includes a two megapixel camera, a five-way controller, three programmable function keys, and a secure action sequence (Ctrl-Alt-Del) button. The tablet also accepts dual, hot-swappable batteries, claimed to provide up to 7.4 hours of continuous operation.

Features and specifications listed by Motion Computing for the J3400 include the following:
