Palm's Windows Mobile-based Treo 700w and Palm OS-based Treo 700p have been selected as reference platforms for the SCO Group's suite of subscription-based mobility services, SCO announced on August 17. SCO's "Me Inc." services offer a variety of mechanisms for communicating with individual and groups in real time, according to the company.

The Me Inc. services currently include Shout, Vote, and Team:
        • Shout -- the Shout service provides a way to quickly communicate to a large group using text or audio messages created directly on a smartphone. Shouts can be received by subscribers on smartphones or for free as emails that link to the sender's branded "Shout landing page." Shouts received as emails can be easily customized with imagery, logos, offers, or "calls-to-action."

        • Vote -- the Vote service offers a way to create opinion polls on the fly and send them to groups of any size from a PC or smartphone.

        • Team -- the Team service is a tool for building and managing groups for use with the other Me Inc. services, according to SCO.

        Me Inc. architecture

The Me Inc. services work through an "edge processor" that handles the data collection and processing functions on behalf of the end-point devices, according to SCO. The edge processor also simplifies integration with backend resources, including security between the mobile devices and the corporate infrastructure.

Sandy Gupta, CTO of SCO's platforms division, stated, "We chose the Palm Treo smartphone as our initial reference platform because of the large user base and the flexibility of the platform."

The Shout and Vote services are available for $10 per month each, with additional charges for contacts beyond the first 100.
