Agilix Labs is shipping a set of note-taking controls intended to make it easy to add digital ink to new or existing Tablet PC applications based on the .NET Framework. InfiNotes, jointly developed with Microsoft, supports devices running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, the company says.

Agilix says that InfiNotes is the first-ever set of "commercial-quality" note-taking controls for Tablet PCs. The company claims that InfiNotes provides a much more complete solution than the InkOverlay and InkPicture controls provided in Microsoft's Tablet PC SDK, by offering integrated support for ink recognition, correction, and more. Additionally, InfiNotes creates an XML-based interchange format standard that allows ink data to be easily shared among InfiNotes-enabled applications.

The company says it developed InfiNotes through a partnership with the Microsoft Tablet PC team, and that Microsoft jointly collaborated on the functional requirements and agreed to jointly promote InfiNotes to all MSDN developers. In return, Agilix agreed to develop InfiNotes and provide 100 percent compatibility with Windows XP Tablet Edition now, and with Longhorn in the future.

InfiNotes is available in two versions. The Standard Edition, which can be downloaded free, supports basic ink note-taking with Windows Journal-like features. The .NET Framework controls support standard ink writing tools such as pens, highlighters, lasso, and eraser with an integrated toolbar; background ink recognition; undo/redo; cut/copy/paste; and format dialogs.

The Professional Edition extends the standard controls to add text note-taking (using a keyboard) with rich text formatting. It adds free-form text boxes; multi-page notes; ink-to-text conversion; zoom in/zoom out; and support for note flags to highlight important items, according to Agilix. The Professional version also provides the ability to embed pictures and graphics, and convert free-form drawn objects into vector-like shapes.

Late last year, another Agilix Tablet PC product, GoBinder, won the runner-up prize in Microsoft's "Does Your Application Think in Ink?" Tablet PC developer contest.

InfiNotes Standard Edition, including an option for a trial version of the Professional Edition, can be downloaded here. Developer support for the Standard Edition is available for $295 per named developer. The Professional Edition may be purchased for $995 per named developer, which includes developer support. Both packages are royalty free.
