Among the new capabilities in version 5.0 is support for Enhanced Compressed Wavelet (ECW) imagery format developed by Earth Resource Mapping. ECW is said to provide compression of raster imagery up to 50:1 with almost no visual loss of information. The format was designed for earth imagery and incorporates georeferencing information in the image, according to MapInfo.

MapX Mobile supports application development targeting Windows Mobile devices using standard languages such as Embedded C++ and Microsoft .NET. The package provides a number of stock tools and dialogs that can allow users to pan and zoom the map; add point, line, or region features; select or label features of any type; and add text or symbol annotations. Dialogs enable control of map properties such as adding and removing layers, controlling the display of map features, and editing the display of thematic maps. The application developer decides how much of this control to expose to users, according to the company.

Applications built with MapX Mobile run on devices running the Pocket PC 2003 or Pocket PC 2003 Phone Edition operating systems on StrongARM or XScale processors. 64 MB of RAM is recommended for data storage, according to MapInfo.
