Magellan has released a software development kit (SDK) aimed at helping device makers create customized navigation applications. The NavCreator SDK supports capabilities such as routing, guidance, and traffic data, and can be used in conjunction with PDAs, mobile phones, personal navigation devices, and in-vehicle navigation systems running Windows CE 5.0, according to the company.

Features of NavCreator, according to Magellan, include:
        • Turn-by-turn navigation modules
        • APIs for defining the application GUI
        • Standard or custom map databases for North America or Europe
        • 3D/2.5D map draw
        • Multi-language support
        • Components:
          • routing
          • guidance
          • traffic
          • saved settings
          • active trip
Magellan is well known as a leader navigation technology, and was a key partner in the development and deployment of the popular Hertz NeverLost system.

According to Hubert Canuet, general manager of Magellan's OEM business unit, NavCreator will enable device OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and ODMs (original design manufacturers) to "differentiate their navigation solutions by adding their graphical user interface to Magellan's navigation software technology."

The NavCreator SDK appears to be immediately available. Pricing was not disclosed.
