Sling Media has launched the first public beta of "placeshifting" support for Windows Mobile Smartphones. SlingPlayer Mobile enables the company's Slingbox set-top box to "placeshift" live TV and other video streams to devices running Windows Mobile Smartphone Edition, over 3G cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth, or USB networks,...

Sling in April launched a beta of SlingPlayer Mobile targeting PDAs running Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Edition and 2003 Second Edition.

Sling says the latest beta, which adds Smartphone support, works with devices such as the recently released Motorola Q, T-Mobile SDA, and i-Mate SP5m. A complete list of compatible devices is available on the company's website, here.

The Slingbox STB translates video signals into a proprietary IPTV format and distributes it over a home network or the Internet. The resulting video stream can be viewed on PCs or Internet-enabled mobile handhelds equipped with SlingPlayer Mobile software. According to the company, the SlingPlayer client software allows users to switch video inputs among a cable box, satellite receiver, DVR, or DVD player, and exercise "complete control" over all video sources.

"The Slingbox has created a whole new phenomenon in television viewing," said Sling Media CEO and co-founder Blake Krikorian. "With SlingPlayer Mobile, we continue to make it easier to extend your living room TV experience to wherever you happen to be and ensure that you never miss that pivotal play or big news event and that you always know the score."

Registered Slingbox owners can download the SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows Smartphone software here. Following the public beta period, SlingPlayer Mobile will be available for $30 including a free 30-day trial. Sling points out that there are no monthly or recurring charges for the use of the software. Users simply need a network connection that can be 3G cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth, or USB.
