Samsung has announced a free Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade for its Verizon-branded SCH-i760 smartphone. The downloadable upgrade provides threaded SMS, a task manager, the ability to zoom out on Web pages, and YouTube video support, along with a fixed memory leak and enhanced Bluetooth, says Samsung.

Announced in September 2007 with Windows Mobile 6.0, the Samsung SCH i-i760 sports both a novel keypad layout and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. With WiFi and Bluetooth on board, it uses Samsung's own ARM-based S3C2442 processor, clocked at 400 MHz, and backed by 64MB of RAM and 128MB of flash. The SCH-i760 not only included the standard Windows Mobile 6.0 operating system, but also voice command, remote control software for home electronics, and a file viewer from Picsel Technologies. Samsung's downloadable upgrade now allows technically inclined owners to load Windows Mobile 6.1 on the device, providing new OS features such as:
        • A "sliding panel" home screen
        • A new task manager
        • Threaded SMS
        • The ability to zoom out on Web pages
        • Improved Direct Push technology
In addition to the above Microsoft-sourced enhancements, the new SCH-i760 ROM includes support for YouTube videos, according to Samsung. It also fixes a memory leak associated with the POOM (Pocket Object Outlook Model) API, and offers an enhanced dial up networking profile for Bluetooth, the company says.

To apply the upgrade, device owners must have a Windows Vista or Windows XP desktop computer, running ActiveSync 4.5 for the latter and Windows Mobile Device Center for the former. The process includes installing Sansung-supplied drivers on the desktop computers, backing up phone data via USB, reprogramming the phone's ROM (as shown, above), then restoring data. The entire process should take from fifteen minutes to half an hour to complete, according to the company.

Samsung's Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade for the Verizon-branded SCH-i760 is freely downloadable from the company's website, here. It should be used only on the SCH-i760, not on any other devices, the company warns.
