Windows PND designed with sports in mind

U.K firm Satsports Ltd. has announced a PND (personal navigation device) designed specifically for sports usage. The Windows CE 5.0-based "Multisports GPS" has a 2.7-inch touchscreen display, fits in a pocket, and includes apps for golfing, running/cycling, skiing, as well as multimedia playback, the company says.

The Multisports GPS -- which measures 3.54 x 2.16 x 0.62 inches, weighs 4.4 ounces, and has a 2.7-inch touchscreen display -- closely resembles a mobile phone, but does not include telephony. Instead, the device has a GPS receiver based on the SiRF starIII chipset, plus an integral GPS antenna, Satsports says.

Rather than being a general-purpose navigation device, the Multisports GPS is designed for sports use. According to Satsports, the unit comes with three specialized applications: Pocket Caddy, for golfing; Satski, for skiing; and Satsports Log, for running and cycling.

Satsports says Pocket Caddy (right) provides a 3D flyover display of an entire golf course and holes, displays yardage or meterage to the green and other POI (points of interest), and records shots. While only a single course is included with the device, additional, premapped courses may be purchased and downloaded online, according to the company. Additionally, it's said, users can map their local courses for free using Google Earth, then transfer coordinates to the device via the Satsports website.

Satski (below left), meanwhile, offers freely downloadable maps of several dozen ski resorts in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, according to Satsports. A Ski-Viewer application lets users employ the Multisports GPS to record their runs in realtime, then send a 3D replay to friends and family via Google Earth, the company adds.

Satsports Log (above right), meanwhile, is relevant to cycling, running, and hiking, since it keeps detailed records of altitude, distance, and speed, Satsports says. The Multisports GPS also provides an MP3 player, image viewer, and video player, the company says.

According to Satsports, the Multisports GPS uses a Samsung S3C2440A processor, with 64MB of RAM and 256MB of flash storage. The device also includes a microSD expansion sot, internal speaker, 1050mAh main battery, and "free silicon case with built-in six-hour backup battery," the company adds.

        Availability

The Multisports GPS appears to be available now for approximately $500. More information may be found on the Satsports website, here.
