Phatware has released a new version of an application that allows Tablet PC and UMPC (ultra-mobile PC) users to invoke complex scripts by writing a short command name. PenCommander 1.5 is optimized for UMPCs, provides new user-level functions, improved performance, support for 32 single-stroke gestures, "and more," the company says.

PenCommander associates a command script with a PenCommand name of up to 11 characters that the user writes in the application's input panel. According to Phatware, the script can be just about anything, such as inserting often-repeated text in a document or launching a frequently-used application. The program comes with more than 50 pre-defined commands. Up to 32 commands or keyboard shortcuts can be assigned to single-stroke pen "gestures."

The new version has a customizable "IDE-like" user interface for creating, editing, and testing new PenCommander scripts, according to Phatware. The IDE (integrated development environment) includes a Wizard that steps users through the process of creating a script. A reference guide to the scripting language is available online, here.

PenCommander 1.5 works with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 or later, according to Phatware. The program is priced at $29.95 and is available from the company's website. A free 30-day trial is available by registering here.
