According to Birdstep, SmartRoaming makes "sensible use" of both the cellular and WiFi features available on devices equipped with multi-network access. The SmartRoaming client automatically detects the networks available, selects the best network choice based on a predefined profile, and negotiates the connection to the network. Switching from a lower priority network to a better connection is done without interrupting user access to the internet or networked applications. Authentication to public WiFi hotspots is also seamless and automatic.
Birdstep says the client works with various commercially available authentication methods. It also supports security components based on SSL VPN, and on thin client infrastructures such as Citrix.
"Birdstep is committed to provide ease of connectivity and seamless mobility clients on the most popular mobile devices. We now have a complete portfolio for Smartphones and PDA's on both Windows Mobile as well as Symbian OS based platforms." said Birdstep CEO Petri Markkanen.
Interested users can sign up for the client from their supported device. The procedure is to access the
SmartRoaming website from a supported device's browser, download the client software, and then subscribe. The first month is free, Birdstep said.
