Symbol expects its use of Windows CE .NET to reduce maintenance costs, and also to help mitigate the "technology-scaling risks" associated with proprietary operating systems that are prevalent in POS offerings.

"The Symbol PD 8500 represents the first product in a new line of Windows CE .NET based, Visa PED security-compliant payment transaction terminals that Symbol plans to introduce in 2004," noted Scott Allan, vice president and general manager of the Symbol payment and kiosk business unit. "This new product family will help retailers comply with industry security standards and realize the benefits of innovative, customer-facing technology."
