Quadrox has introduced a network video recorder (NVR) for security applications, which is powered by Windows XP Embedded. The device takes network surveillance data in any current standard format and records it in Windows Media (WM) format, "without losing the original quality of the image," according to the company.

The images can then be played back on the NVR using Windows Media Player or Real Player, or on a PC, PDA, or mobile phone.

Dubbed the WebCCTV, this is the first Windows Media compatible NVR offered with a three-year on-site warranty, according to Quadrox, and this is extendable up to five years. "Such mission critical devices as NVR's should NEVER be taken away from the customer's premises after initial installation," the company said.

The WebCCTV NVR is based on an Intel Pentium 4 running Microsoft's Windows XP Embedded operating system. It accommodates a range of network technologies from low-bandwidth GPRS wireless links to very high-bandwidth LAN connections, providing high quality recording and simultaneous playback and transmission of live images "without overloading the available network." It also supports a range of data compression techniques, including JPEG, JPEG 2000, MPEG-4, WM 7, 8, 9, and other WM-compatible codecs. A wide variety of fixed and movable IP cameras (up to 16 per NVR) is also supported, with compression technique independently assigned on a per camera basis. Recording can be continuous, motion based, or event triggered.

The NVR contains an 80 GB to 330 GB hard drive for image recording, with a CD-R/RW onboard for backup. It also permits Terabytes of images to be recorded and backed up on external devices, according to Quadrox. I/O interfaces include 10/100/1000 Mbit Ethernet, parallel and serial ports, six USB 2 ports, and ports for a mouse, keyboard, and VGA-level display monitor. Other key features of the WebCCTV include versatile image retrieval and search tools, a digital signature image authentication tool, instant remote access and remote alarm notification, and built-in health monitoring.
