Citing the growing threat presented by "proof-of-concept" viruses designed to attack mobile devices, BullGuard has released a "security solution" for Windows Mobile Pocket PCs. Bullguard Mobile provides on-access and on-demand scanning, as well as automatic updates downloaded via HTTP polling on GPRS, EDGE, WiFi, and UMTS networks, the company says.

The company lists the following features for Bullguard Mobile:
        • Malicious code protection for downloads, SMS, MMS, Email, WiFi, Bluetooth, and Infrared connections
        • Device-resident on-access and on-demand antivirus scanning
        • Automatic threat response and threat notification
        • Auto-deletion of infected files
        • Security event logging
        • Optimization to preserve device and network performance
        • Automatic and up-to-date virus definitions via HTTP over GPRS/EDGE/WiFi/UMTS
        • Easy over-the-air wireless installation
Bullguard Mobile is based on the same fundamental principles as the company's desktop security product, the company says.

A 2-month free trial of BullGuard Mobile for Microsoft Pocket PC is available here. Bullguard says it plans to release similar products for Windows Mobile Smartphone (and Symbian OS) in the near future.

The first virus known to attack Windows CE devices, including Pocket PCs and smartphones, appeared last July. WinCE4.Dust was not malicious and, as its author subsequently explained, it was designed as a proof of concept to show that Windows CE is vulnerable.
