The US Army's Medical Communications for Combat Casualty Care (MC4) is preparing to deploy over 11,000 security-enhanced Windows Mobile-based HP Pocket PCs to its medical staff. The devices will be used by Army medics worldwide, especially in the current combat situations in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to Pointsec, provider...

        of the endpoint security software.

Pointsec notes that with mobile medical teams treating soldiers in hostile environments, patient information must be "readily available, easily transferable to treatment centers, and absolutely secure." Pointsec's FIPS-certified encryption software ensures that encryption is performed according to an organization's security policies without requiring action on the part of end users, and its "on-the-fly" encryption method results in virtually no performance difference for the device, according to the company.

MC4 says its overall objective is to replace unreliable paper-based systems with an automated medical digitization system for soldier care. It says it is taking the technology of telemedicine and other existing automation systems used in civilian medical and support facilities, and adapting them to combat environments. MC4 says it links healthcare providers, medical diagnostic systems, information command and control, and medical command and control systems at all echelons.
