Skype Technologies is beta testing a premium service that allows users of its peer-to-peer VoIP network to be reached from landline POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) phones. SkypeIn provides personal phone numbers in several countries and is an affordable, flexible alternative to mobile phone roaming charges, according to the...

SkypeIn subscribers are assigned a regular telephone number in a country and area code of their choice. Calls to that number are routed onto the Skype VoIP network and reach the subscriber anywhere in the world. Phone numbers are being offered in Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States during the beta period.

Skype is a free peer-to-peer VoIP service that offers unlimited, unmetered calls to other Skype users from a desktop PC or Wi-Fi enabled mobile device, including Windows Mobile Pocket PCs. Calls can also be placed to POTS phones at local rates using the pre-paid SkypeOut service.

Also in beta test is Skype Voicemail. The service saves messages of up to 10 minutes length if the user is away, offline, or busy on another call, according to Skype. Voicemail is included with a SkypeIn subscription and is also available as a seperate service.

Three-month SkypeIn subscriptions are currently available from the Skype store for 10 Euros (approximately $13), and 12-month subscriptions cost 30 Euros ($39). Both SkypeIn subscriptions include Voicemail. Skype Voicemail alone is priced at 5 Euros ($7) for 3 months or 15 Euros ($19) for 12 months. The basic Skype software is downloadable here.
